There are 1.4 million members in 146,000 Rotary Clubs in 135 countries. The bond among Rotarians to serve their communities above and beyond their selves makes for a remarkable camaraderie among their clubs and the men and women who take the pledge of community service as a lifestyle. The Town of Lahaina, Hawaii, known for the friendliness and closeness of the community, has been devastated by wildfires that torched and destroyed the usually bustling, neighborly, tourist friendly region. With a great need for assistance, Rotary Clubs around the world are now rallying around the Rotary Club of Lahaina. Lahaina Town is in the process of collecting themselves, cleaning up and planning to come back. The funds being raised are not meant to immediately rebuild, but to make sure long-term needs such as infrastructure, education, and the needs of the most vulnerable are being met. Rotary District 5330, comprising clubs in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, contacted their clubs and asked that funding go direct to the Lahaina Rotary club, made up of community and business leaders in the stricken City. While there are other funding organizations, the feeling is no one will understand the unique needs of the bewildered and battered residents better than those who live, work, and raise their families there. When Twentynine Palms Rotary President Dan Mintz broached the need to the local club, the response was immediate. The members unanimously voted to direct a substantial donation of Club resources to Lahaina. When Mintz invited individual members to augment the funds the donations started building and members were walking up to Mintz with substantial cash donations. The Lahaina fund will grow over the next few weeks, any member of the community who would like to donate can contact Mintz at the Bowladium or any member of the 29 Palms Rotary Club. Twentynine Palms Rotary club President Dan Mintz starts to collect cash donations from his members to help the people of Lahaina, Hawaii, through their local Rotary Club.
