Our club sponsored local students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp. The students regaled us with stories of their trip, where they learned leadership skills. These kids will be our future leaders!
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a three-day Leadership Conference in Crestline, CA. It is a reward for outstanding youth to further develop their leadership skills with small group discussions, teamwork activities and passionate speakers. Sponsored by the 63 Rotary Clubs in Distinct 5330 (San Bernardino & Riverside Counties) including our 29 palms Rotary Club, RYLA combines learning in a casual, relaxed atmosphere with social and fun time to provide a fast paced and memorable leadership experience. It was great to hear these future leaders’ stories of how RYLA is already changing their lives! Jamie, Anna, Jack and Don (not pictured) held down the booth! The Twentynine Palms Rotary Club is sponsoring a unique event that is part of the opening ceremonies for the Twentynine Palms Little League.
For over 30 years, the Little League organization has been providing baseball and softball to the community. At 6:00 PM this Saturday, March 31, 2023, the official opening ceremonies for the league’s Spring season will be held on the ballfields at Luckie Park. This year, for the first time, the League will show a movie on two giant screens set up right on the fields immediately following the ceremonies. The movie “THE SANDLOT” was chosen because it has a great message and focuses on youth athletics the sport of baseball. The problem was the cost of royalties and rights to screen the movie. Hearing of the need, the Rotary Club stepped up to sponsor the event by paying the costs to bring the film to Twentynine Palms. Accepting the check at a recent Rotary meeting, Twentynine Palms Little League President Nic Ibarra said “We wanted to do something special to kick off this year’s season and we felt having all the teams gather to enjoy a movie together is a great way to foster camaraderie and do team-building.” The Twentynine Palms Rotary Club, chartered in 1948, is part of Rotary International, a non-profit dedicated to Community Service and World Peace, there are 1.2 million Rotarians in 134 countries. They meet locally at noon Wednesdays at the Little Church of the Desert meeting room. Joyce Coffey, of the Alhambra Rotary Club, came to have lunch with us. It was wonderful to meet her!
The Twentynine Palms Rotary club continued a yearly tradition of giving with a donation of 450 children’s books to elementary schools in Twentynine Palms. The books, which were all individually wrapped by the High School softball teams – were delivered to Twentynine Palms Elementary School by Rotarians and – of course – Santa Claus, who were all greeted by Mrs. Mohn’s Kindergarten class.
In Mrs. Childress’s 3rd grade class everyone was read a Christmas story by City Manager Frank Luckino. The books will be distributed to all elementary schools in the Twentynine Palms area, and the donation of children’s books by the 29 palms rotary continues a year-long tradition of giving back to the youngest generation here in the Morongo Basin. –Robert Hayden, Z1077FM The November 9th meeting of the Twentynine Palms Rotary club was a testament to the generosity of the rural desert community.
The guest speaker that day was Cynthia Lopez, who was there on behalf of her husband, Dave Lopez, who is the advisor to the Twentynine Palms High School Interact Club. Despite some difficulty, the Interactors are working diligently to gather food and turkeys for their annual Thanksgiving Dinner give-away. During her presentation, Lopez noted that one of the biggest challenges was the loss of a longtime anonymous donor, who had purchased the turkeys and other incidentals for the Thanksgiving baskets in the past. Their goal is to provide up to 300 of the baskets, each designed to provide a complete dinner for a family of four. Immediately upon hearing of the need, Rotary Club President Liz Meyer proposed the club provide the needed funding. Between Club funds and donations from individual members, Lopez left the meeting with over $1,200 to purchase turkeys and food. Rotarians are further helping out by collecting food on a Thanksgiving Dinner list. Little Church of the desert is providing freezer space at the church for the Turkeys. The Interact club is teaming up with Reach Out Morongo Basin to hand out at least 150 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need. If you need a turkey with all the fixings, you can contact Reach Out Morongo Basin at 760-361-1410 to sign up. The Interact Club will be handing out the Thanksgiving baskets on Saturday, Nov. 19th from noon to 1:30 at Twentynine Palms High School. Rotary 29, in conjunction with the two other Rotary Clubs in the Morongo Basin, hosted District Governor Don Casper at a dinner in the lovely backyard of Rotarian Randall Councell. The weather was perfect, the grass lush, and the wine and goodwill flowed! Pastor Don Thursby was inducted into our club by Governor Casper.
